- The evaluation and conservation of the breed genetic variability is essential to guarantee its sustainable use over time, as well as being essential to define conservation strategies or genetic improvement programs. The Sanmartinero indigenous bovine breed is one of the seven indigenous breeds present in Colombia and is at risk of disappearing given the low number of individuals in the country due to the preferential use of improved exotic breeds. The objective of this study was to characterize the genetic diversity in the closed nucleus of Sanmartinero Creole cattle from the germplasm bank of the Colombian nation by pedigree analysis. Information recorded from 5224 individuals between 1978 and 2020 was analyzed to estimate the pedigree completeness and parameters derived from the consanguinity coefficient and the probability of the gene origin. A total of 12, 6, and 7.98 maximum, complete and equivalent generations were tracked, respectively. The generation interval was 5.34 years and the increase of consanguinity per generation was 0.43%. For the reference population (animals in the current inventory) mean consanguinity was 1.55% and the effective population size was 117.36 individuals. To maintain genetic variability and reduce the inbreeding levels in the conservation nucleus of Sanmartinero bovine breed, it is recommended to avoid mating related individuals, and unrelated individuals from other populations could also be included. © 2021 Fundacion CIPAV.
