Abstracto
- The aim of this study was to estimate the heritability and genetic trends for birth weight (BW), weaning weight adjusted to 240 days (WW) and weight at 16 months of age (W16) in Romosinuano creole cattle. Information from the 1960 to 2011 database Turipaná Research Center was used, employing unitrait models that included the fixed effects of contemporary group (year-season-sex-) and age of the dam, random direct genetic effects, dam maternal genetic (only for BW and WW), permanent environmental maternal (only for BW and WW), and residual. Variance components and genetic parameters were estimated by REML, using the program AIREML.The direct heritability for BW was 0.19 ± 0.04, 0.13 ± 0.04 for WW and 0.21 ± 0.05 for W16. Maternal heritabilities for BW and WW were 0.003 ± 0.02 and 0.08 ± 0.03, respectively. The correlations between direct and maternal genetic effects for BW and WW were negative (-0.49 ± 0.68 and-0.13 ± 0.27). Genetic trends for direct genetic effects for traits studied were all positive (P <0.01), which suggest little genetic progress in the population. © 2014, Fundacion CIPAV. All rights reserved.
