Abstracto
- The objective of this work was to estimate components of (co)variance for growth traits in Costeño Con Cuernos cattle from the Turipaná Research Center of Agrosavia, Colombia. Variance components and genetic parameters were estimated using the restricted maximum likelihood (REML) procedure, through a multiple trait animal model, using the Wombat software. The multiple trait model included the fixed effects of the contemporary group (year-season-sex), direct additive genetic random effects for the trait birth weight (BW), weaning weight adjusted to 240 days (WW) and weight at 16 months (W16M) and maternal additive genetic effect and permanent environment only for BW and WW. Likewise, the genetic and environmental correlations were calculated for the traits BW, WW and W16M. The estimated values for direct heritability for BW, WW and W16M were 0.18 ± 0.05, 0.33 ± 0.06 and 0.36 ± 0.05, respectively and for the maternal effect was 0.006 ± 0.02 for BW and 0.10 ± 0.03 for WW. The genetic correlation between BW and WW was 0.694 ± 0.133, between BW and W16M of 0.665 ± 0.131 and of 0.896 ± 0.049 between WW and W16M. According to the estimated values of heritability for WW and W16M, genetic progress in the population can be achieved through the selection of superior animals and the values of genetic correlations among the traits studied would facilitate the selection process. © 2018, Fundacion CIPAV.
