Abstracto

  • The in vivo germplasm bank that has been structured since 2014 at the Palmira Research Center (Corpoica) has allowed the conservation of genetic variability, that is, of the different genes responsible for the characteristics of adaptation, rusticity, fertility, production, product quality, among others presented by the Hartón del Valle breed. The limited updated information of the Hartón del Valle Creole breed on milk production and some parameters of growth and development before weaning are the main antecedent for which this summary is presented. This contribution presents partial data of the milk production curve and growth parameters of calves before weaning. For an initial population sample of 20 cows of the Bank it was identified that the maximum milk production occurs between day 40 to 45 of lactation, with an average of 8.3 liters, milking with calf on the side, and where the cows have been fed with rotational grazing without supplementation. From birth records from 2014 to 2016 for 72 calves weaning weights were determined in 175 (+/-15) kg with daily weight gain of 700 grams and 195 (+/- 11) kg with daily weight gain of 827 grams, for females and males respectively. After four years since the establishment of the Bank, it has become possible to have updated information on parameters of milk production and growth of calves of the Hartón del Valle breed. From this moment the Bank can be interpreted as a source of genes for the search of genetic combinations in the production of animal biotypes adjusted to the future needs of animal production in the tropics.
