- Characteristics of growth are of paramount importance within productive systems. Components of variance and genetic parameters for Weaning (PD) and Weight gain between birth and weaning (GDND) in a Blanco Orejinegro (BON) population in Colombia were estimated. Database of genealogical records were used, comprising information from 8239 animals and 5385 records of PD and GDNG. The additive, maternal, permanent environment and error variances for PD were 152.69, 10.09, 0.0002 and 537.22 respectively, and for GDND were 0.002, 0.0006, 0.00001 and 0.007, respectively. Direct heritability for PD was 0.22 and maternal 0.01; for GDND was 0.21 and maternal 0.06. Evaluated characteristics presented medium direct heritability, including them in a genetic breeding program would give better selection criteria for future males, leading to a high genetic progression of the breed.
