Effect of inherent and non inherent characteristics at first calving of Romosinuano creole colombian cattle Artículo académico uri icon

Abstracto

  • The aim of the work was to characterize phenotypically and genetically the age at first calving of bovine females of the Romosinuano breed of the Bovine Germplasm Bank of the Turipaná Research Center. For this, 1190 records of age at first calving, obtained between 1936 and 2015, were used. Initially, a bootstrapping was carried out to determine which variables had an effect on that character. Subsequently, the genetic parameters for the same, were obtained after estimation of the components of variance from the animal model, by maximum restricted likelihood, using the MTDFREML program. The mean and deviation for age at first calving was 34.56 ± 3.48 months and the inheritance index of 0.32 ± 0.09. The fixed effects of sex of the calf, and the year and month of birth classes of the bovine female were evaluated, of which the last two had significant influence on the character. In general, the inheritance index indicated that selection for age at first calving may have an interesting effect to promote desirable changes in genetic composition, should it be desired to promote genetic gains for this character in the bovine population of the breed.
